What we represent on the labels of our wines is a tribute to our land, Sicily.
The ancient depiction of the famous mosaic found in Piazza Armerina, in the province of Enna, tells the legend of Eros (Cupid) and Psyche (Beauty) who, out of envy of Venus, are forced to love each other in secret. This passion gives birth to a daughter who will be called Voluptas (Pleasure).
This symbol wants to represent a metaphor where Eros is Gulfi, whose love for his beautiful land (Psyche) gives birth to his wines which are an expression of pure pleasure (Voluptas).
Famiglia Catania
Vito Catania wanted to continue the work on vines and olive oil initiated by his family in Sicily, more than three generations ago. His passion for wine and his homeland, Sicily, led him to develop this prestigious vineyard in his native country: Chiaramonte Gulfi on Monti Iblei in the province of Ragusa. Since 1996, he added innovation to the inherited tradition of his ancestors, from a long process of massal selection of vines to an extremely meticulous attention to the culture of its vines to create unique and prestigious Crus.
The vineyard, which begins precisely in Monti Iblei, in the region of Ragusa – the area of the traditional Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG – extending to the lower part of Sicily, Pachino, specifically in the DOC Eloro. These vines give birth to 4 Grands Crus of Nero d’Avola – as the French people could simply and clearly call them – with one unique difference: the terroir. It ends in Randazzo, the Etna DOC on the northern slope of the volcano, with more than 100 years old vines planted at an altitude of 850 meters. Grapes planted are Nerello Mascalese and some Nerello Cappuccio.
Improve and transmit: this is our only goal. In order to have the work of Famiglia Catania, after 2000 years of history, culture and hard work, pursued by our children in a country with immense wealth and unrivalled beauty. We must transmit to our children what we have learned from our fathers. The land is our capital, a legacy we must transmit and that we should not waste, distort, or even worse, destroy, and we must also necessarily improve.
The Gulfi Philosophy
We respect what nature offers us by cultivating according to tradition, with sapling vines. We do not irrigate because this was taught to us by our ancestors, we follow the rhythms of nature, letting our vines find their own balance. We cultivate according to the principles of organic farming as a natural consequence of our production philosophy, respecting ourselves and consumers. We have always kept the sacredness of the harvest unchanged, a moment in which we collect the grapes manually, with the rituality of a gesture handed down by history.
Our wines contain the essence of our land, the sounds of nature, the intensity of the colors of Sicily. Each Gulfi wine hides a precise personality, capable of awakening all our senses.
